Why Compost?

Composting provides a partial solution to an issue of great concern in many communities. All around the country landfills are filling up and other waste disposal options are becoming ever harder to find. Composting provides a way not only of reducing the amount of waste that needs to be disposed of, but also of converting it into a product that is useful for gardening, landscaping, or house plants.

By addressing the solid waste issue, composting provides away of instilling in residents a sense of environmental stewardship.

Most importantly, composting also recycles the nutrients in organic waste to create a valuable soil amendment for healthy soil and gardens. Compost enriches soil in many ways; adding valuable nutrients to soil, helping soil retain moisture and making soil easier to dig. Compost help plants grow bigger and stronger, by providing them with the essential minerals and nutrients they need to suppress plant diseases and pests naturally, without the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Composting can also serve as a great educational tool to teach children about the nutrient cycle and natural resource conservation. Want to learn more? Watch "Kiss the Ground" a great video on why we should compost our food and yard waste:

Cayuga County is committed to promoting proper waste management practices and seeks out ways to help our residents reduce waste production. Food waste makes up a large portion of waste generation and at-home composting is one great way to achieve our waste reduction goals. We are hopeful that this program will engage our residents in waste reduction practices by providing the necessary composting equipment.
